The US State Department and Dutch government both rate Curaçao at Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) — the same as most European countries. It's a safe island. Curaçao's nightlife rotates. Each night the crowd moves to a different district, which changes where you'll need picking up and how long the wait will be. This is the pattern most weeks:

Rides get scarce in waves, not gradually. Three windows account for most of it:

Do not drive yourself — and why that matters here

Curaçao enforces a legal blood-alcohol limit and police do run checks, particularly at weekends and during Carnival. Beyond the law, the practical problem is the roads: much of the route between Willemstad, Mambo Beach and Jan Thiel is unlit, roundabouts are frequent, and signage is limited once you leave the main boulevards.

If you rented a car for the week, leave it at the hotel on the night you go out. A return taxi trip to Pietermaai costs a fraction of what a single incident would, and you skip the parking problem entirely — Pietermaai has very little of it, and what exists fills early.

Carnival season changes everything

Between January and Carnival, parades close major roads through Willemstad, sometimes for most of a day. Routes that normally take fifteen minutes get re-routed, and demand runs far above a normal weekend. If you are visiting in Carnival season, book rides further ahead than you otherwise would and expect longer journeys rather than longer waits.

If you are staying outside Willemstad

A night out looks very different from Westpunt, Playa Kalki or the far west. You are 45 minutes to an hour from Pietermaai each way, and at 2AM there are very few cars operating that far out. Book the return leg before you leave, or plan to stay in town. The same applies, less severely, from Blue Bay and Santa Barbara.
