Taxi to Punda Willemstad's UNESCO Waterfront District

Punda is where the pastel Handelskade waterfront, Fort Amsterdam, and the Venezuelan floating market are. Kumbai gets you there with fixed pricing from any hotel or cruise terminal.

The Heart of Willemstad

What to See in Punda

Punda (meaning "the point" in Papiamentu) is the eastern half of Willemstad's UNESCO World Heritage historic district. It's the side most tourists head to first — the Handelskade waterfront with its famously colorful Dutch colonial facades, Fort Amsterdam guarding the harbor mouth, the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue (oldest in the Americas), and the floating market where Venezuelan traders sell fresh produce from their boats.

From the cruise terminals in Otrobanda, you walk across the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge — if it's swung open for ship traffic, the free pedestrian ferry runs. From most hotels, Kumbai is the most practical transfer.

🌈

Handelskade

The most photographed street in Curaçao — a row of 18th-century Dutch merchant houses painted in vivid colors along St Anna Bay.

🏰

Fort Amsterdam

A 17th-century Dutch fort at the mouth of the harbor, now home to the Governor's residence. The yellow fort walls are an iconic part of the Willemstad skyline.

Floating Market

Venezuelan trading boats moored along Sha Caprileskade sell fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish. One of Curaçao's most authentic daily markets — best visited in the morning.

Getting to Punda

Punda vs Otrobanda — Understanding Both Sides

Willemstad is divided by St Anna Bay. Punda sits on the east side, Otrobanda on the west. Most tourists focus on Punda for the Handelskade photos, but Otrobanda has the Rif Fort, Kura Hulanda, and the street art scene. A full Willemstad visit covers both — cross on the Queen Emma Bridge (when open) or the free ferry.

Kumbai transfers can drop you at either side of the bridge. For cruise passengers arriving at Mega Pier (Otrobanda side), the bridge walk to Punda is about 10 minutes on foot.
